The internet was getting wonky. Wifi was spotty. Load times were increasing. The whole “at home internet experience” was deteriorating.
Then, last night, KABOOM! In one dialog box the entire internet was lost to me.
First I panicked. Then I called my ISP. Then I called them again. THEN, after a few hours, I got reconnected, but wifi was gone. I marched my Time Capsule in to the Apple Store. They said it was fine. It wasn’t yet. In the meantime, internet had slowed to a crawl again. I called my ISP again. They decided it was time to send a dude, the next day in fact. Today. I almost missed the dude, since they ALWAYS take your number down wrong and so I never got the 30 minute warning. I caught him as he was leaving. Whatever. Another hour and a new modem later we were back online. Time Capsule, however, was not. What are the chances of both going to shit at the same time?? Only me…. So my afternoon (6 hours in fact) were spent trouble-shooting the Time Capsule thing.
Long story short: I ALWAYS buy the Apple Care. Have never, in two iMacs 3 iPhones countless iPods and shuffles, have I ever used it. This Time Capsule is the only purchase I have made and NOT bought Apple Care. So of course I needed it. I would have been covered. I would have not spent all this TIME.
Ai dios mio!!!
SO anyhoo, I eventually wiped the whole thing clean and reset as if it were new. And now it works.

I made a purchase. Tell me why I fell for it..
I was just reading some Apple related news and there was a post about Comic Life’s new application Comic Life Magiq. It looks pretty fun, so I looked to see if I still had the Comic Life copy that came with my Mac. I did! Then I saw that I could qualify for the low price of 20 bucks (for a limited time!) as a ‘crossgrade’. (I think that’s a crossgrade because it is a separate application.) So I checked. Sure enough, I qualified! So here I am 20 bucks later downloading a new and fancy version of an application I have only used once before… What a chain of events!
Maybe I should do a weekly Comic Life Magiq post to justify this. I’ll need to learn how to use it. I guess I should use the other version I have had once and a while too. Sigh.

It’s a tragedy! A tragedy, I tell you!
I went with Richard to the mall today. Yes, my one day off and I still went to a mall. I know I am insane. But there I was. I had tagged along for one reason. I wanted to pop into Sephora for a new bottle of cologne. So while Richard was lingering at Nordstrom I went off on my errand. Only to find out they didn’t have any. So I went over to Nordstrom. They had none as well, but suggested Saks. So I explained my plight to Richard and proceeded to every high-end department store in the mall. The young man at Bloomingdale’s was the one that finally told me that it had been discontinued. Thierry Mugler B-Men was gone?? *sniff* He suggested e-bay. He also almost sold me Tom Ford’s new fragrance. But I can’t help thinking as I wore it around the mall that I smelled like the imagery in the ads. I felt like I had spritzed myself with vagina juice. Even though it does smell nice, that product is not for me…
So we finished up at the mall and headed home. It took forever, due to all the joyous shoppers out and about. Damn traffic. But I made it safe, and proceeded to my Mac to do some searching. Thankfully Amazon came to my rescue. They had a full catalog of B-Men products! Which is good, as I was not too excited about e-bay cologne. Or the vagina juice. Although I have to admit that one is growing on me… Weird.

I don’t know who ‘they’ are, but I’d agree with them on this one. Wanna know what I did last night? Really?
Well, after work my man took me out to our new favorite dinner spot Jimmy Carters. W ate waay too much. Great food AND service there! Then we came back home. Richard promptly fell asleep in his recliner. I sat at the computer with every intent of doing something creative. Maybe a podcast, come up with a Lunchtime Poll, something. No such luck. I managed to register for this years NaBloPoMo. (Come on and join me! All you have to do is post every day!)
Then I got lost.
I went to Apple’s official list of 300+ New Features. I read each one, then tried it out or tried to find it. Is that part of my OCD? I mean, to do something like that? OMG. It took hours! But it was a lot of fun, in a geeky way. I really love this latest version of OS X…
Anyhoo, I went to bed super late. Crazy boy.

That’s right kiddies. We are on the Leopard. I know, right?
So there are so many things I am liking about it. Even a casual user like me will get a lot of use from the new features. I won’t list them here. We have been reading about it for ages… But I do have like, a bit of complaining to get out. I do. I know, I am sorry Steve. But still. That login screen? The “space” look? Embarrassing. I HATE it. I think I already hacked it away too. We’ll see when I reboot. I also am seriously bugging about the Dock. The Dock and I have always had a love hate thing. I loved it centered, zoom on, and clear. Yes, clear. It took a separate hacking app. to do it, but my dock is always clear. Now it looks more like a little stage for a little Barbie band. What, with the lights coming up through it, and the way it lays back. Blech. I hope Unsanity updates that hack sooner than later. Seriously. The see-thru menu bar is not really cute either, but I can live with it.
Otherwise I am pretty thrilled. Things really do seem faster and smoother. I did the upgrade, like I have in the past with no real problems. My Keychain got lost for a bit, but Software Update fixed me right up on that one. Time Machine is ‘backing up’ as we speak. I cannot wait to see that in action! Wee!

There’s a new version of the Apple web browser Safari. It’s Safari 3 Public Beta. I downloaded it today. It has some nifty new features. I feel more productive already! The best part is that now it’s available for Windows too. Windows people rejoice! I am anxious to hear how it works compared to the Mac version.
So how about it Windows people? Do you think you’ll give Safari a try on your machine?

I have this thing about me where if something goes wrong I have to fix it. Not like eventually. I mean right then. So when something goes bad with the computer it is really bad. I will (and have) plant my self for hours till I figure it out.
After three hours I have to give up on todays problem. I know what it is. I just can’t fix it. I did however figure out a workaround and got the driver I needed installed. So hopefully I can rest. I have a very early day tomorrow. But for the sake of venting lemmee ‘splain this to you. Hopefully I can be clear and junk…
It seems that I can no longer download applications from a disk image. When I try to, first they don’t look right. You know how on a Mac everything looks a certain way? Well they download looking like little pages instead of the usual see through open box looking icon. Then there is an error message when Stuffit tries to open it: The destination folder is on a locked volume. So here’s the thing. I can boot into the last version of OSX on my external hard drive (10.4.8) and all works as expected. So I assume that the latest download messed up my permissions. Or I screwed something up. All I have downloaded lately are small files that have none of the disk image stuff going on. Peppers and widgets and such. I have no idea exactly *when* this started.
Now what do I do? I want a better fix than restoring the whole computer from the back-up OR starting over from the instal disks. Anyone on a Mac heard of or noticed this??
UPDATE: I fixed it! It seems there was a little app in the Utilities folder called Installer that went missing somewhere between there and here. Totally odd. I haven’t deleted ANYTHING. Anyhoo, all is good now. Phew!

Macworld starts tomorrow. I am very excited, as I want a new gadget! I just hope there will be something new iPod related because I could totally justify that. My iPod is sooo old, and even Richard agrees that we will be needing a new one. Those little buggers are useful!
Anyhoo, all this got me started on thinking aboot what to do with the old mac. We just recently upgraded to the latest Intel iMac number (she’s so sassy!) and have yet to figure out what to do with the old iMac. It was one of the original flat panel models with the silver twisty arm and round base. It was a dream come true getting that! I saved up for months!! I think I have an emotional attachment. Is that weird? So what to do with it. It cannot burn or mount ant disks, so upgrading it is out. For that matter so are games and new programs unless they come from the internet. It’s not worth having the drive repaired/replaced because.. hello? New computer. Can I even wipe the hard drive without mounting a CD? I don’t know. I can’t contemplate getting rid of it with out doing that! I used that computer for all my financial type stuff!
I blogged my innermost personal thoughts from there. I started my blog from there. Should I just pack it up an leave it in the garage? Decisions, decisions.

Busy busy today…
I am so distracted by the new computer and learning all of the new things it can do… I mean, I have to dig and read up at Apple.com to figure it all out, since looks are deceiving. Just because it *acts* like the old computer doesn’t mean that’s all it can do. Heh.
In the meantime, I have to go cook dinner… I am a bad blogger! Bad! *spanks self*
Maybe I’ll record something to post tonight. Richard will be planted in front of the tv. Prison Break is his latest favorite… (I cut that one out of my roster last season when it got all unbelievable.)
