I wish I had pictures. This was the Best Birthday on Record, sweetie!! Wow!!
So yeah, it all started with a $100 gift card from my mother. She srsly rawks. Srsly. THEN, my most amazing and much loved man surprised me! You see, I had twatted at some point that I wanted one of two things for my birthday; a cabana booth at Urban Mo’s with 15 people or nothing. Hahah! I was feeling bitchy and self important that day. Anyhoo. We worked all day Monday. I knew we were going to Mo’s (I kinda got my way), and had my outfit all planned out. I stuck to it even tho my new fake leather jacket was calling me… All primped and ready for whatever we get to Mo’s. And sit. We order appetizers, adult beverages, and read tweets and Brightkite and stuff. After a while Joelle">Joelle and Mikey show up. We gab and enjoy the eats. Joelle and Richard talk about how we scored Premium Seating without having a larger party. I was like… okay. Then our San Diego family Sheila and her daughter show up! Yay! More booze and stuff happened. (the order of events after this point may differ from reality, thank you, vodka) Then Gooster and Gio pop up out of nowhere!! My cabana was getting full! OMG. It was awesome! Also, our server was our good friend Marisol! Other Mo’s peeps were stopping by and giving well wished and stuff. Marisol had provided an inflatable monkey for every one to sign. Yay again! Captain, one of my good friends who actually has never, EVER attended my birthday’s prior arrived. Food, fun, laughter!! Then I saw my BFF Marcus walking over! He had said he might not make it, so I wasn’t expecting him. I was literally amazed at all these people to celebrate with me. I was. Then the super secret surprise guest, someone on Twitter I have been talking to lately who just seems so amazing… @Uberglitterati!!
There was the traditional singing, candle blowing, an odd looking cupcake that I refused to eat, and shots to decline… I stayed hydrated and enjoyed many Cosmos! I tried to talk to everyone but it was overwhelming! So many people!! I have never had a birthday like that. Ever. I had no idea how to behave!! After a bit folks started leaving. I hugged my goodbyes. I so adore everyone that was there. Making an effort to go out on a Monday in December? I love you all soooo much. Nights like that really give you a picture of who in your life is important, even if you don’t see each-other much. When it got down to just us gays we headed to Brass Rail for some twirling and stuff. Fun, fun, fun!
Oi. I wish I had pictures! I have the best man and best friends ever. Srsly. I could cry. You guys rock!!
Then today I found out Richard had invited the new neighbor friends too! I love him extra for that! He made a stellar effort this year… Kudos, you! *kiss*
What a night! Can I just tell you first, that alcohol is a very dangerous drug? Especially when combined with glitter, hair, and heels…
I was logged into Facebook the other day and saw that Vuboq was a-coming-to-town. Like Santa. Kinda. Only this was for work and not like gift giving and reindeer. Now we’ve only chatted a bit here and there on the Social Networks, mostly the Twitter. But hey, I read his blog pretty regularly, and I am like the San Diego welcome wagon, so I sent him a message inviting him to our holiday Shindig. Sadly, after much traveling that day he cancelled. But being the persistent one, I mentioned we should at least do drinks while he was in town.
Because, to be perfectly honest, most of my friends are FROM the internet. And also, I figured he’d cancel again. Just cause, you know, we hadn’t chatted that often before. But the next day we had a date, time, and place all figured out. Yay! Being that it was going to be a Wednesday I naturally chose Dreamgirls over at the Urban Mo’s. A guaranteed good time. As it turned out I was right!
So Vuboq (can I say his name? Not sure since he doesn’t use it..) is amazing. He’s fun, frisky, and adorable all at once. It was surprisingly easy to talk to him, and it was that weird “like we’ve known each other forever” vibe. I am so, so, soo glad we met!!! (In fact I wish he lived here… So we could hang out and laugh a lot and have Martini Time). Plus, he brought the fantastic Miss Michelle M. She’s not a tweet or a blog, so like… no link. But she is FUN! Also a local gal so we hope to see her again.
It turned out that the drag show was the most perfect venue.. We had the most amazing time talking, watching the scandalous performances of the Dreamgirl’s Beauties, and enjoying boozy beverages. Ice broken, we ended up on the heated patio and just talked, laughed, and harassed the “girl’s”. Well, not harassed so much as meet and greeted… and photographed! Yay! So here’s a few photos:
Weekend recap! I had a blast every day… Listen as I attempt to recount the fun. Meeting with some local Twitterers included:
@gooster
@tenthmuse
@mikeynerd
@slickdome (not quite local)
@richardallen
@wesstone
@danielphillip (me!)
A few photos on Flickr, as well as here on the blog. Cause I blogged the whole thing too. Heh. Friend me, follow me…
UPDATE: It’ll be 11 years for me and Richard. Not 12. Feels like 12 tho.
Urban Mo’s was a blast last night. This photo was one of only three that I took, but it has Trixie and I love her. I always end up wishing I brought the actual camera! But then who wants to be that guy chasing people with a camera all night when you’ve only just met? Right? So a few iPhone photos are all I got.
So anyhoo, @gooster, @wesstone, @slickdome, @richardallen, @jeffred, @tenthmuse, @mikeynerd, and me @danielphillip were in attendance. And Mo’s was packed. Packed, I tell you! I was poked, prodded, and groped in places not normally groped.. Hellooo! The heat was pretty intense too. All that aside I think a crowd is a good venue to meet new people tho, in case you don’t hit it off and you want to slip away… It could happen! What a great time tho! We all seemed to play nicely together, although it did get a bit wild towards the end. I danced I twirled and posed like a freak to Miley IN PUBLIC! OMG. LOL. And one of my “Apple martinis” was basically a glass of vodka. Cuh-ra-zy! Nothing like booze to make meeting new people less stressful… Kidding! Kinda.
Most importantly I think we made a few new friends, and that was the whole point, right?
Okay, so just in from the big night out at Mo’s. Totally a blast. My Twitter peeps rock!
I can safely say this because I have met 1/16th of them in person. Okay, maybe not that many… But still, between tonight and the #sdtweetups I have been to I can say that Twitter is my friend yo. More, plus a photo or two tomorrow. Must sleep now.
As a wise woman once said, “Tweet me, twitter me, add me, friend me, follow me, stalk me, love me! Twitter!!”
It’s a San Diego online event! Well, an event I am trying to create. You see, there are some San Diego online personalities that I want to meet, and others I want to hang out with again. So I decided to Twitter about it on Monday night. It seemed my little local posse was up for meeting! So here’s the deal:
Daniel (danielphillip.com) and Richard (richardallen.vox.com) will be @ Urban Mo’s around 9ish. Joining us so far is Joelle (tenth-muse.com), Wes Stone (liveitupthepodcast.com), and Gooster (goostersd.blogspot.com) as well as a few more that haven’t super-confirmed (Jenn of jennifervangrove.com, Fred of jeffred.vox.com). I think the internet might explode. Kidding! But it does look to be a good time. There is no agenda, no set length of time that we’ll all be there (at least 2 hours for Richard and I), but do stop in and say hello if you are inclined…
But really, does that surprise anyone? So here’s the thing. We were at Urban Mo’s. It tries to be a restaurant but really it’s a big ol’ gay bar. We were there with our gorgeous friends for dinner and drinks. Let’s remember for a moment that Richard and I do not usually (or ever actually) do the gay bar scene. We used to, but ever since that bar manager from Chevy’s in Daly City licked Richard’s nipple in the middle of a bar in Castro and that whole scene happened we tend to keep it low key. Have I ever told that story here? I dunno.. Shel’s been reading forever. Maybe he can comment if he remembers that one. But that, combined with my sordid nightclub past keep me out of those places. Give me dinner and a simple dive bar anytime. Anyhoo, so like I was saying. The ‘going out’ thing is totally stressful for me. First I had to pick an outfit. Not easy since I am slimmer than I have been in a while and all my jeans are like huge. Bad rapper huge. So I shopped. I dressed. I waited for Richard. I changed 2 more times.
Eventually we get there and have a great time. I was going in and out of my ‘queen of the club’ mental space from the old days. It’s amazing how you can walk a certain way and people just move out of the way.. or you can become invisible and get trapped and tripped over. I like to toy with my ‘presence’. It’s an old survival trick I learned from many nights at the old club ‘Spread’ in SF. It’s probably all in my own head tho. I am weird like that. But where was I? This story is making NO sense. Sorry. But yeah, there was this guy who totally grinned every time I passed. Since I was trying to be ‘fun’ I smiled back. I am totally trying to be more social these days. It’s part of something I have been working on… But that’s totally off topic. So I pass, I smile, the whole time sucking in my gut due to my outfit choices. Then Britney came on. I have been wanting to dance to that song FOREVER! Gimme More! So I rushed to the dance floor. My friends followed and I grooved to Gimme More. (That is like the best song to dance to, especially since I haven’t danced in like YEARS. Thanks to Brit, every time you misstep you just stop, look up all dazed and wander around the floor a bit. Then you pick up from nowhere and poorly lip-sync… HILARIOUS!) So after the song was over I suddenly felt overcrowded, hot, and had to be outside IMMEDIATELY. Do you ever get like that? It’s normal for me, but we all know I am a bit off. I like to think it’s a cute ‘quirk’. It was when I was close enough to the door to smell the smoke-free air that this same guy appeared out of nowhere and tried to chat me up. “Hola, hola, hola…”, with a big smile and arms outstretched. I don’t know that it was actual flirting, since I didn’t hang around, but I am assuming so. Either way, I was so amazingly rude. I looked at him, looked away, side stepped to get around him and walked off without even speaking.
I am such a bitch. Now when I was 20 that sort of behavior was one thing. But I am old now. In gay years, even OLDER! I am lucky to have young hispanic hotties say hello to me, let alone flirt.
So yeah. I feel horrible now! I could have at the very least said hello. But I was in a state, and HAD to get outside… I am sorry Hot Friendly Guy! But I am taken anyway, so if you were flirting it would not have gotten anywhere, so maybe it’s for the best after all.
The night did continue for a while. Half of the group had left after dinner (which we ate in a cabana under that gorgeous lamp) leaving us with Captain and David. Now Captain and Richard have that same high energy and were all over the bar. David and I took over a small table. Apparently we are now ‘regulars’, even tho it was only my second time there. As David and I sat there waiting for the boys to return, members of the staff stopped by to chat. First it was that Peachy Puff boy in the speedo and body glitter. He wanted to confide in us that some guy across the room thought he was Trixie out of drag. Impossible! Trixie is the larger than life drag queen that sells the jello shot syringes for 2 bucks a pop. I replied that alcohol is ‘a very dangerous drug’. Speaking of Trixie, a bit later she came up to our table and put down her bucket o’ shots for a chat as well. Heh!
Once Captain and Richard returned with temporary tattoos dangerously close to their jubbly bits that they showed off for us AND Trixie, we knew that it was time to go…
Well I have to say, Richard’s birthday week is a smashing success. He has been busy every single day! I’d like take all the credit for that, but I cannot. It has been because of some pretty amazing guys we know too. So after the big bash at the Baja Betty’s and Urban Mo’s I thought Richard might have been down for the count. He was throwing up after all… (Alcohol is a very dangerous drug.) However, he was up before me the next morning, bright eyed and bushy tailed! I think it was a birthday miracle!
As promised, our friend Captain called about the rollerblading plans we were hatching the night before. Wow! I really had thought all of that would have been lost to multiple hangovers in the group. Not so much, it seems. So we got ourselves ready to rollerblade and do lunch in Coronado. What do you wear for that?! Coronado is a place I like to dress a bit nicer. Nicer than I would to rollerblade! So I had to forgo the do-rag. We ended up skating 11 miles in to Coronado, by way of The Silver Strand. We were against the wind and going up a very slight grade. Those Bloody Marys we had at the Hotel Del were well earned I tell you! The way back was tougher, even though it was with a tail wind and down a slight grade. Well, for me anyways. My feet got all tore up again. Something about that Strand, cause our other skating adventures haven’t blistered me like that. So I was injured. And bitchy. Captain bought me bandages for the way back. It was pretty pathetic, but I survived. It was 22 miles round trip. I made it for about 20, and then my speed-skating partners showed up with the car.
From there we went to the Jamba Juice to replenish our fluids for some grocery shopping. We picked up some things for dinner, including Captain’s charming husband and headed back to our place for some bbq and a movie. Death Becomes Her of course. We like to watch it Rocky Horror style at this point, reciting all the lines and shouting at the screen. Good times!
This morning Richard is at a brunch at Lips with his work peeps. I was thinking of going in to work. I don’t want to though. You see, we are getting ready for this “visit”. There is an unspoken pressure for me to go in on my days off. I plan to go in Tuesday. That puts me at 6 days for the week and 8 days in a row. I feel that, plus the longer hours I’ll be doing on Monday, Tuesday, AND Wednesday is enough. And it is. But my shit had better be READY if I don’t stop in today. I hate this shit!!
Either way, I want to something ‘just the two of us’ to wrap up the festivities. Who knows when he’ll be done at lips though…
