We have been trying to do our rollerblading thing at least once a week this year. I like it, even though I am not the most balanced on wheels. Heh. But it is good fun and puts us outdoors for a few hours. Last week we noticed Richard needed some new wheels. We figured after looking at mine that we should both re-wheel. So on our way up to the Miramar Reservoir (my favorite spot to skate) we stopped off at the Big 5 in search of wheels. Actually it was our second stop, but whatever. So we find an associate to lead us to the wheels. They have like 3 kinds to choose from. Not many. So Richard chats with the associate about his skates and follows his wheel advice. I just picked the ones that said “street”. Cause I figure that’s where I skate, right? So we buy our wheels. There was a Starbucks nearby so we had coffees while we put our new wheels on our blades. Then it was off to the lake!
What a difference. We were both amazed at how the new wheels made our blades feel. Effortless gliding… Wee. Erm. Yeah. So off we went. About halfway Richard noticed his new wheel had torn. Determined, we skated on. He was clearly having a tough time, but it was nice to be able to keep up with him for a change. After a bit he fell behind. By the time we were finished he was pretty much walking. The new wheels were worn down past where his old ones had been! Destroyed. Mine were fine. Weird right? The dude at Big 5 had told him to get those, but clearly he was wrong.
So anyhoo, now Richard is off to buy new wheels. We figured it would be quick so we could go blading today. Not so much. He is at the third sporting place. We’ll see what he ends up with.
